What is SEO?

Have you got a website that doesnā€™t have many visitors, or do you sometimes struggle to find a website, even after you have made what should be a straightforward search for it? Well, it could be that little to no work has been done to make it visible to the public.

Thatā€™s where SEO comes in. It stands for ā€˜Search Engine Optimisationā€™. Put simply, it involves making changes to your website to improve its visibility on search engines, such as Google, Yahoo or Bing, when someone makes a relevant search. The more work that is done to improve the visibility of the pages on the website, the more likely you are to attract new and existing customers or clients. It should be something that is done for all websites. After all, attracting visitors is why you create a website, isnā€™t it?

How Does SEO Work?

All search engines, such as Google, Yahoo or Bing, use bots to scan all the pages of your website. A ā€˜botā€™ is an autonomous internet program, or piece of software, that can interact with systems or users. In this instance, it is interacting with your website. These bots collect as much information as they can, before using an algorithm to determine, against ranking factors, the order websites will appear for a given search query. Some ranking factors include keywords, site and page loading speed, and mobile usability.

It is possible to pay for adverts that will ā€˜pinā€™ your website high up in search rankings. If you have ever made a search where the link is ā€˜sponsoredā€™ then that is what is happening. However, paid adverts only last as long as you are paying for them. If your website is not optimised for search engines, without an advert you will likely have very low organic search rankings.

Why is SEO Important for Marketing your Website?

Right now, Google alone is reported to handle over 2 trillion searches per year. Thatā€™s 2000 billion searches. Searches could be for any number of reasons, from hobbies and recipes to products and services. If you want to have a large slice of the cake, so to speak, it is important that you ensure your website has been optimised for SEO. Your business or organisation may very well depend on it.
